Barry is trying a thought experiment. He is trying, for just a short period of time, to think of himself in the third person. That is why he is using the third person pronoun to refer to himself in this blog post.
It sounds daft, but if you try it for more than a few minutes it can become seriously freaky.
Barry thinks it’s a good way of seeing how illusory the concept of self is. If he thinks of himself as not being “himself” then who is doing the thinking, and who is doing the observing?
